Email Marketing
So What Is E-Mail Marketing?
E-mail marketing is pretty much exactly what it sounds like, marketing through e-mail. I am not talking about all the spam messages you get every day trying to sell you prescription drugs, pornography, viagra, and all of those other annoying spam messages that we get every day. I know I get like 500 of these e-mails a day, thank god for spam filters!
E-mail marketing is e-mail that you send to people who want to receive your e-mails. People who actually signed up to get your e-mails. This sign up form that people use to sign up for an e-mail course, newsletter, or any other type of e-mail list is called an opt-in form.
Most people usually request just a name and e-mail address for this opt-in form when solely e-mail marketing. Other information is included if the person wants to go beyond e-mail (like phone number, address, etc.). But usually you will just request a name and e-mail when having people opt-in.
After the person opts in to your e-mail list, whether it be a free e-course (like the 7 day e-course I offer on my home page), a newsletter, or whatever other type of content, that person will receive an e-mail notifying them that they have opted in to the specific e-mail list. They then have to open that e-mail and click on the confirm link, and they will officially be on the e-mail list.
Why Use E-mail Marketing?
Well there are many different reason to use e-mail marketing, but the most common reason is to build a long term relationship with your list subscribers.
When you build a long term relationship with your subscribers, they start to trust you and you can make money by referring certain programs, tools, and products that they are interested in. But remember that when you set up a list, your sole reason shouldn’t be to make money.
You can’t just send the people on your list product after product, program after program, tool after tool just so that you can make money off the sales you make. This is the wrong way to use an e-mail list, and it will just not work well for either side.
When I create my lists, my main reason is to help those people get the information they are looking for! This includes information that I will make a commission off of every once in a while (because I will be recommending things that will TRULY HELP THEM), but it should also include a lot of free information.
Never send your list subscribers something that you will make a commission off of when you could have given them the information for free, or when you know it is not a quality tool, program, or product. The goal of the list is to help the subscriber get the best information possible on what they are looking for, whether free or paid.
If you can give it to them for free, give it to them for free, they will really appreciate it. And when information or products come around that costs money (and that you will make money from), they have no problem with this and trust you as they know you are genuinely helping them achieve their goal.
Let me say this again, don’t try to make money off your list subscribers; don’t go out of your way just to make commissions. Just help them get the information that they are looking for. That way, it will work well for both sides. They get the information they are looking for, and you get commissions every once in a while.
I know I repeated some of the same information above, but I just wanted to make this super clear to you. When you genuinely are trying your best to help your subscribers reach their goal you will make new friends, build long term relationships, build long term customers in some cases, and more importantly you will help those people achieve what they were trying to achieve in the first place!
How Do I Set Up An E-mail List?
The way you set up an e-mail list is by signing up to an auto responder service. The #1 auto responder company in my opinion is Aweber.
I am pretty sure that all auto responder services cost money, and I have not heard of a free one or I would recommend it to you. Even if there is a free service out there, it is probably not of the quality that you would want it to be.
An auto responder service is definitely something that you want to invest money in when running your online business. This is a very important part of communicating with people automatically. Let me explain how it works really quickly.
Lets use the dog training example again. I will give you some simple steps to how the auto responder services work (how setting up an e-mail list works). For my example I will use aweber. If you are not using aweber, the process will still be very similar to this, if not exactly the same.
7 Steps Explaining An E-mail List:
-
1. Log into your auto responder service, and click create new list.
-
2. Name your list, fill out a description, and set the reply address.
-
3. Setup your messages. You can add as many messages as you please, and you can control how long apart the messages will be sent. So message 1 could be sent right away, message 2 could be sent the very next day, message 3 could be sent 4 days later, etc etc.
-
4. Now when people opt-in to your e-mail list they will receive the confirmation e-mail. After they open the confirmation e-mail and click the confirmation link they will be officially subscribed to your list.
-
5. They will now get your first message. The rest of the messages that you have organized in that specific list will be sent in the order you placed them in, and the times you sent them to be sent (the time you set between sending each e-mail).
-
6. Whenever you want to send out an important message to everyone on your list, you send out a broadcast. A broadcast is used to announce something that is going on now, and is not a part of the messages in the automatic list. If you send out a broadcast, everyone on your list will get the broadcast immediately. But if you send the broadcast now, and someone else signs up to your list an hour later, they will not get the broadcast. Only the people currently on the list at the time the broadcast is sent get the broadcast.
-
7. You can always add more messages. If you originally have 10 automatic messages setup, you can always add to them at any time.
Hopefully the above helps you understand how an e-mail list works, and just how important e-mail marketing is to your business.
Remember that an e-mail list does NOT just have to be used to give people free information and to make sales every once in a while.
Many people also use lists to notify people who are already customers of theirs. For example, if I sign up for a virus removal program, that company may use a list to notify me of news, information, and updates. Lists can be used to contact people automatically very easily for any purpose necessary!
