Why The Right Keywords Are SO Important
I wanted to make a post about why keywords are so important, because each project you dive into is going to start with the keywords you pick to go after. Before you start any type of project, whether you are going to be doing pay per click, affiliate marketing, search engine optimization, landing pages, or whatever kind of marketing project you are going to be doing – you have to pick which keywords. And this can make you or break you and I will explain why throughout this post.
First I want to recommend you check out some related posts to this one on keywords and keyword research, and some of the posts you may be interested in are Keywords And Keyword Research which talks about what keywords are and what keyword research is and why exactly they are both important. You may also check out How To Do Proper Keyword Research which of course tells you how you can start doing proper keyword research, the right way as a lot of people do not do keyword research the right way unfortunately – and that can lead to major mistakes and losses of income. And Doing Keyword Research for Long Tail Keywords is the last post you may want to check out and that focuses on the longer keyword phrases (known as “long tail keywords”) which are extremely important in order for the success of especially new marketers. Long tail keywords are the kinds of keywords that you can quickly rank for in the top of the search engines and start making money immediately for. Lastly you may check out What Is The Right Keyword Density For Keywords?
Keywords are definitely one of the most important parts of your whole marketing campaign – and that’s because if you pick the wrong keywords you could be wasting all of the time you spent or spend on the marketing campaign.
So first lets go over exactly what a keyword is so that everyone who is a little confused with the terminology knows exactly what we are talking about and can follow us.
A keyword is a word or group of words that you use for your marketing campaign.
So for example if you are doing pay per click, your keywords you pick will be the words that you want your pay per click ads to show for each time someone does a search in that particular search engine. So if you are doing a Google AdWords pay per click campaign, and you were doing a campaign lets say on Wealthy Affiliate University (the exact program that taught me how to succeed in this business), the following is a list of some of the keywords you may want to pick:
Wealthy Affiliate, Wealthy Affiliate University, Buy Wealthy Affiliate, Join Wealthy Affiliate, Wealthy Affiliate Review, Wealthy Affiliate Information, Purchase Wealthy Affiliate, Wealthy Affiliate Discount
So those words above would be your “keywords”. Any time someone typed in one of those keywords in the Google search engine, your Google AdWords ad would show, as these are the KEYWORDS that trigger your ad to show.
Now lets do an example with some affiliate marketing, search engine optimization type marketing campaign as this is what a lot of you will probably be starting with as pay per click is a little more advanced and takes a large bankroll at times to get going and get profitable – as it takes some spending before you get the drift of this game.
For this example lets use the program that taught me how to be a profitable drop shipper – Worldwide Brands. You would first do your keyword research and figure out which keywords you want to “go after” (this is the important part I am talking about). Lets say you do your research and you find some words that you want to “go after” for your marketing campaign…and those words are…
Worldwide Brands, Get Worldwide Brands, Join Worldwide Brands, Worldwide Brands Membership, About Worldwide Brands
Those above words would be your “keywords”. And that description is the best way to describe what a keyword actually is and is a basic explanation of how you can begin to go about picking your keywords.
So now lets talk about the original question, why are the right keywords are SO important?
Well lets say that you pick your keywords, buy a domain, buy a hosting account (if you don’t already have a hosting account). This can already be a couple hours of work and about $25 depending on what you needed.
Now you pay someone to build you a professional review page, or typical landing page or whatever (if you can’t do good web design) – that’s another $150 right there, if not more, not to mention the time spend finding someone and doing the project description for your designer – tack on another hour.
Now you need to start putting on the finishing touches and then start your marketing efforts. You join 10 forums, and make a couple posts to each daily. You do a few blog comments each day. You do social media work like social bookmarking and social networking stuff each day. You buy a couple high quality links or go looking for some link exchange partners if you can’t afford to buy links. You submit to a couple different directories each day. You create an article or two a day and submit them to article directories to get some extra traffic and some additional linking power. You do a press release or two a week.
And we can stop there as those are the basic marketing efforts for search engine optimization.
Now depending on how competitive the market and your keywords are – you can do these things for weeks, months, or years before getting to the top of the search engines which should always be your goal. Lets be conservative, and say you do these things for a month.
By this time you have spent about 3 hours a day and almost $300. That’s 150 hours, a month of work, and $300 – and again we are being conservative, remember that, as a lot of marketing campaigns will take longer unless you are going after long tail keywords.
And by this time you realize not only are the not on the top page, not only are you not in the top 100, but you are not even in the top 500 results. You have picked the “wrong” keywords – you have picked keywords that are way too competitive for you.
Do you see why picking the right keywords are so important?
You just spent 150 hours of work, $300, and a month of your time working on something that you are going to see absolutely nothing out of, nothing but a loss. If you just spent a little more time doing the right keyword research and picking the RIGHT keywords, you could have been at the top of the search engines for your keywords and making a good $25 a day or so (just an “average” number I am throwing out there) completely on auto-pilot.
And this is exactly why picking the right keywords is SO important.
Hopefully this post helped you. If you want even more keyword information you can checkout Doing Keyword Research For Your Drop Shipping Business and How To Properly Research The Niche You Are In.
And speaking about doing keyword research in drop shipping businesses – if drop shipping is not something you are familiar with it may be something you may want to get familiar with because it enables you to easily sell physical products without having to buy, ship, package, or deal with any of the physical products. If you want more information on drop shipping I recommend checking out my Worldwide Brands Review, Doba Review, or Salehoo Review.
Take the time to do your keyword research, as if you don’t you are going to totally waste your time and marketing efforts and this is something that can cause you to get extremely frustrated and quit a very rewarding business.
Just remember this business is only rewarding when you work is right and when you work it smart – so again take your time, and pick the right keywords, and make extra sure you have the right keywords before you continue on with your marketing campaign!
