Digging Deep For Great Keywords
In this post I want to talk all about digging deep for great keywords, as this is where it all begins. I want to talk really quickly why it all begins with keywords and why the keywords that you start with are all so important.
Before I do that I want to recommend some similar posts that will help you with both keywords and keyword research. You can check out some of these similar posts at the following: Why The Right Keywords Are SO Important, 5 Parts Of Wealthy Affiliate Keyword Research Tool, Doing Keyword Research For Your Drop Shipping Business and finally What Is Keyword Research?
If you pick the wrong keywords then you can waste a whole bunch of time, effort, and money in your internet marketing projects that you start and work with. A lot of people will just jump right into a niche and pick keywords that they THINK are going to be keywords. They will do no research and just go with their gut instinct or their “opinion” if that’s what you want to call it.
You see people are very notorious for being very “selfish” and believing that they are always right, that they do not need any help, and that what they do is best. Their way is the only way, their way is the highway as the saying go, “It’s my way or the highway”.
That is until you learn the hard way, and most people do learn the hard way with whatever it is that they are doing. The point of this post is to of course teach you how to dig deep for great keywords, but also to hopefully save you from the “I’m always right” bug that lies deep within every single human being in the world. I don’t want you to go through the same process that I went through where I thought I knew best, picked keywords that I thought would be great keywords that would make me a killing, but ended up just wasting a ton of my time.
You see it all starts with the keywords as I said before. If you have the wrong keywords, then you are going to be getting everything else wrong along the way. Let me explain why this is true.
Say you are like most hard headed people and you just go with your instincts on what keywords you are going to be rolling with and working with. You pick about 5 keywords that you think are going to be super great big earning keywords for yourself and you dive in. You make your site, you write all of your content, and you build all of your links (Doing Keyword Research for Long Tail Keywords).
This is usually a process that can take anywhere from weeks to months to years depending on how competitive your keywords are. You see you didn’t do any keyword research so you have no idea how long it’s going to take – which means you have not prepared yourself for what’s ahead of you.
So after a month of work, a few hundred dollars of investment, and hundreds of hours of work, your website is no where to be found. Why is that? Well remember you did not do your keyword research. There is no way you are going to be ranking in the top of the search engines or anywhere near the top of the search engines (at least not for a few years or so), because all of the sites in the top of the search engines for the keywords you picked are huge sites that have been around for many years and have tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of links. Many of those links being extremely powerful.
Or in the other case those keywords you picked that you thought were going to be super profitable have a TON of competition. Not only are there some big hitters in the top of the search engines, but you have hundreds of millions of websites to compete against – your keywords that you thought were oh so great turn out to be keywords that a ton of other people have been going after for years (What Is The Right Keyword Density For Keywords?).
Or in the last case your site even reaches the top of the search engine and it reaches it quickly. Wow, you are at the #1 spot…already! Great job! The only problem is that this keyword that you thought was so great gets absolutely no traffic (or very little traffic). Or even if it gets some sort of traffic that is mild – it is the kind of traffic that does not even make sales. It is the type of keyword that people type into the search engine when they are simply looking for information. They are not looking to buy, but they are simply for some free information on whatever topic it is that the niche you are doing is in.
And this is the reason why digging deep for great keywords is so important. If you don’t take the time to do this keyword research then you are going to have no idea what kind of competition you are going to have to go against, you have no idea whether the keywords you are going after are “buying” keywords”, you have no idea how long it would take to get to the top of the search engines or what kind of work you are going to have to do in order to get to the top of the search engines.
So if you go ahead and just “pick” keywords based on what YOU think (because remember that us people are natural born know it alls) is going to make you good money, you could be wasting a whole lot of time and effort ahead of you. So why would you not take the time to make this important step and dig deep for great keywords? It’s the most important step. If you mess up here it messes up the whole rest of the process.
Now if you mess up somewhere else it’s a whole lot easier to fix. If you pick great keywords then mess up by building links that are not so great, you can just start going after better links. Or if you create a website that does not convert very well you can just go back and re-do the website to try and make it convert better. Or if you don’t have your on page search engine optimization right, you can go back and make it right. But like I said, if you have keywords that are not very good because you did not dig deep, what are you going to do then? You are going to have to totally restart your whole project. EVERYTHING. Hopefully you are beginning to see just how important digging deep for great keywords is, because this IS the most important step.
So first, lets talk about what kind of tools you can use in order to pick the right keywords – or great keywords as in the those keywords that are going to not have too much competition, but a good flow of traffic, and convert extremely well (How To Properly Research The Niche You Are In).
I want to recommend three tools to you because these are the three tools that I use myself. Two of these tools are “paid” tools where you either have to pay for the tool itself or for a membership in order to access the tool (along with many other tools and information), and one of these tools is totally free for those of you who do not have a dime to invest in the internet marketing business (and the free tool does just about as well as the paid tools do so do not worry about this if you don’t have access to either of the paid tools).
Lets go over these 3 awesome keyword research and keyword tools now:
1) Google’s Keyword Tool – This is Google’s keyword research tool that they offer for free. Totally for free! And it is an awesome tool and it works very well indeed. With this tool you enter in either a word or phrase (or multiple words or phrases) and it spits back a list of keywords related to what you entered. It gives a list of keywords, the amount of competition, the global monthly searches, and the local monthly searches. This is some very valuable information because you can see how many searches each keyword gets and the amount of competition.
2) Market Samurai – This is definitely my favorite keyword tool, as it is an all in one tool. Not only is it a great keyword tool but it is a bunch of different tools in one. It is a $149 for this tool, a one time fee. But it well worth every single penny because this is one of the best internet marketing tools that you can get your hands on. This tool has the following features: Rank Tracker (find out where you rank for specified keywords), Keyword Research (which of course does great keyword research and is the reason for listing this tool), SEO Competition (which finds out what kind of competition you will have to face in the search engines), Domains, Monetization, Find Content, Publish Content, Promotion, and Adwords. Now this is a ton of tools in one as you can see for a wonderful price – you can find out everything you need to know about keywords with this one tool which is what makes it my favorite.
3) Wealthy Affiliate Keyword Tool – This is another one of my favorite tools for keyword research, although I usually use Market Samurai I will use Wealthy Affiliate’s Keyword Research Tool on occasion because I enjoy getting different variations of keyword results from different tools. There’s no harm in getting two “opinions” on keywords, besides, this is a project that you could be spending many months, possibly even years on, so you want to get it right. There are actually a few different parts to the Wealthy Affiliate Keyword Research tool and that’s the main keyword research tool, the keyword list builder, the competition spy tool, the match types tool, and the phrase builder tool. All of these tools together are another awesome way to make sure you dig deep for great keywords.
Although the better of these 3 keyword research tools are the two paid tools as you can do a more in depth research of whatever keywords you are looking to go after, the Google keyword tool is still a very good tool to use. But I recommend that you do checkout either Wealthy Affiliate (as not only do they have a keyword tool but they have tons of other tools and are the absolute best at teaching the internet marketing business – they are who personally taught me this business) or Market Samurai if you want a tool for keyword research alone (along with the other few tools that are included in the tool of course).
So how exactly do you dig deep for great keywords? Well the first thing you need to do is take the keyword that YOU think is such a great keyword and enter it into whichever of these (or other keyword tool if you are using a different one) tools you are using and take a good look at the results. Find out how much competition there is, find out how many searches the keyword is getting, find out what kind of SEO competition there is. Dig deep, find out as much about the keyword as you can.
When you dig deep like this you can actually prepare yourself for what’s ahead of you if you are going to continue to go after this keyword – which is going to include building a website, preparing a whole lot of content for that website, and then going on a whole large link building campaign in order to get your website ranking in the top of the search engines for that given keyword.
One thing that I like to do is take a close look at the websites that are already in the top of the search engines for the given keyword that I may be looking to start going after (or keywords of course). Take a close look at those websites, find out what the PR of those websites are, do a whois check on those websites to see how long they have been around, and check to see how many links those websites have and what types of links those websites have (Different Affiliate Marketing Resources).
If I find that most of the websites on the first page for my keyword have tens of thousands of links and have a PR of 5 or greater (sometimes 4 or greater will scare me away depending on the other research) or have a large number of links from very powerful or high PR sites, then I will just move on to a different keyword.
It’s very important that you do this research in order to prepare yourself for the work that lies ahead of you. If it is going to take you years to get to the top of the search engines you have to be prepared for this. Because if you are not prepared to do years of work in order to get to the top, then you are going to waste a whole lot of time and a whole lot of money. And that’s time and money that could have been spent elsewhere, on less competitive keywords that you could have made more money for.
That is why I usually like to recommend to my subscribers to go after more long tail keywords that are in very hungry niches. Let me give you a great example that I got from Travis over at Wealthy Affiliate.
He was doing a post about keywords and niches and he made some great points, but pointed out an even greater niche that I love using for my examples. And that is the niche of “lose weight before my wedding day”.
I mean think about it. It’s a 6 word keyword! But at the same time it’s a keyword that will get searched a good amount of times, but at the same time you’re not going to have that much competition because not a whole lot of people are willing to dig that deep into niches. Most people will simply try to go after “lose weight” – and they don’t have a chance at that. Some people will take it to the next step and try something a little better like “lose weight for wedding”. But very few people will take it that step further and go after “lose weight before my wedding day” (Different Affiliate Marketing Opportunities).
It’s also mighty important for you to put yourself in the place of the person doing the search. Lets use this keyword as an example. Put yourself in the place of someone who might type in “lose weight before my wedding day” into the search engines. Most of these people who type this into the search engines are going to be WOMEN who want to lose weight before they get married. Think about it…a wedding is one of the most important things that happens in a woman’s WHOLE LIFE! Do you think that they are going to be willing to spend money on a product that is going to help them reach this goal of losing weight before their wedding day? You better believe it – this day only comes around once for them (well for some of them more than once), and you better believe that they are willing to spend some money on whatever is going to help them achieve that goal.
So this is another thing that makes a keyword super special – putting yourself in place of the searcher. The what, who, when, where, why questions are what you have to ask about the keyword. Make sure that you ask yourself if your keyword has a sense of urgency for the searcher – is it a buying keyword or just a keyword that someone types when they are looking for more information?
Hopefully you got out of this post what I was looking to make this post for, and that is that you HAVE to dig deep for great keywords. You have to do that extra work to get those extra special keywords that are going to make you a lot of money. A lot of people skip over this part because it is time consuming, but it’s the most important part of the whole process because without the right keyword your whole project is going to go down in flames and you have just wasted all of the time, effort, and money that you have put into that particular project!
